Scientific name: Fraxinus pennsylvanica

The adaptability of the green ash makes it a commonly planted shade tree in cities. Helpfully, this is also one of the healthiest varieties of the common ash trees. The tree grows roughly 60 feet tall and can be 40 feet wide, growing somewhat quickly. Leaves of the green ash have serrated margins and are generally broad and flat.  The major threat to the green ash is the emerald ash borer, an exotic pest that attacks all of Ohio's native ash species. Infestations of the borer have been found in Ohio and the surrounding states, first in 2003.

Green ash trees are among the first to have their leaves turn and to drop their leaves in the autumn.

While the green ash trees are generally smaller than its relative the white ash, the tallest green ash tree in Ohio is 11 feet taller than the tallest white ash.
