The modern style is typically characterized by clean, simple lines and honest use of material. It generally does not include decorative embellishments. Modern-style homes typically have low, horizontal massing, flat roofs, and an emphasis on rectangular forms and horizontal planes.

The house was designed by owner Robert (Bob) Wandel in 1968; the design received a Columbus Plan Award (precursor to AIA Awards). Wandel is a retired architect with Wandel & Schnell Architects Inc. (now WSA Studio). He was a board member of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, governing board member of First Community Church, past president of the Columbus chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and has served on the board of the Architects Society of Ohio. The Wandel family still owns the home.

The home was featured in the Columbus Dispatch Homes Section in 1972. From the article "Simplicity characterizes the Wandel home which uses expansion joints as a design element across the front of the stucco facade". Features of the home included a balconied study with spiral staircase access, a two-story living room, and a free-standing fireplace. Double sliding glass doors were used instead of conventional windows around the living room to afford more expansive views and air flow (Columbus Dispatch photo above).
